My non-Snowy Childhood

Kottke, an ever-entertaining source of sundry links and reviews, just pointed to How To: Build a Badass Snow Fort, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like.
It almost makes me wish that I’d grown up in a place where I had snow to play in as a child. As a kid, I had a few sledding opportunities (often involving me whining until my uncle dragged me back up the hill), and perhaps had a snowball fight or two, but that’s about it. I’m now an adult (!) in an area where it actually does snow, but it’s not Fun snow. It’s Depressing snow. Instead of building badass snow forts, I’m working (um, I’m on break) and looking out at the blustery snow and glad I don’t need to drive that often anymore.
You’ll notice I said “almost” above. I grew up in San Diego, a few minutes from the beach, and we’d go there often after school (thanks, Mom!) and in the summer. I could also wear shorts to school year-round, and I never had to put on snowpants. At school we ate outside year-round unless it was raining, and going outside was never a 10-minute procedure of putting on gloves, hats, coats, and whatever else you need to prevent yourself from freezing to death.
In conclusion, and in summary, I don’t like snow very much, but building a sweet snow fort sounds kinda fun. I wonder if that would be considered billable time…

Phew! I almost felt guilty for making you live in California for so much of your life. But I’m sure building a fort or having a snowball fight could still fit into your scheme of things—you’re not 30 yet. :)
