What's the Deal with Radio Shack?

This Onion article sums up exactly how I feel about Radio Shack. In particular:

“Have you even been inside of a RadioShack recently?” Day asked. “Just walking into the place makes you feel vaguely depressed and alienated. Maybe our customers are at the mall anyway and don’t feel like driving to Best Buy? I suppose that’s possible, but still, it’s just…weird.”

Yep, that’s fairly on-target.

On the one hand, I’m amazed that they’ve stayed in business. They’ve been an awful store with awful end user products forever.

On the other hand, I don’t know of any other place that well know where you can go buy a transistor, or any other whacky little electronic part that electronics geeks use to build robots and stuff.

I suspect this is what has kept them alive all this time. Best Buy has to buy their parts from SOMEPLACE. :)

I think they make a lot of money in tricking people to buy things they have no business buying. I sent my mother in to buy a convertor from the little rabbit-ear antenna clips to coax, and they tried to sell her $40 worth of adapters which didn’t even do what she needed.
