On Thursday we were in Kona, on the other side of the Big Island. We rented a car, drove all of 2 miles up to a state park and started hiking through a big field of lava.

Frommer's told us that a four-wheel-drive vehicle was not needed, but that was a lie. This lava is not what we were expected to drive on, but the actual road wasn't much better.

We're at the beach which, like I said, is only a few miles from the airport. The nice thing about the trek across the lava is that not that many people are here.
